Why save Water?

  • Water is a vital natural resource, supporting all types of life as we know it. Domestic water consumption is higher today than it has ever been. With a growing population and the unpredictable effects of climate change on our rainfall pattern, it's now more important than ever to consider our own water consumption.
  • As well as conserving the water itself, reducing our reliance upon mains water will save energy. It takes nearly half a kilowatt hour of electricity to supply each cubic metre of water and almost another half a kilowatt hour to treat a cubic metre of wastewater. All this energy usage contributes to CO2 emissions, so reducing our water usage will not only save our water bills, but will save CO2 emissions as well.

How can you save water?

So, being eco-friendly means saving water, but how do we do this? Luckily, it's easy to change many water wasting habits. GreenSteps has some simple tips to help you:

  • Each person uses as much as 150 litres of water in our homes every day. About 60 litres of that is used to flush the loo. Fitting an Interflush water saving device can save about half of that water - some 30 litres per day per person! Click here to buy the Interflush online
  • Wash fruit and veg in a bowl rather than under a tap - save the leftover water for watering house plants.
  • Use the minimum amount of water when boiling water in saucepans and kettles and you'll save energy too!
  • Don't leave the tap running whilst brushing teeth, shaving or washing your hands.
  • Fitting Tapmagic water saving devices to your existing taps can reduce water usage in basins by up to 70%! Click here to buy Tapmagic online.
  • Have a short invigorating shower rather than a bath - better still, fit a low flow aerating shower head.
  • Use Rainwater to water your garden by collecting it in Water Butts. Click here to view GreenSteps water butts to buy online.
  • Don't flush cotton wool or tissues down the WC - use the bin instead.
  • Buying only the lowest water usage washing machines and dishwashers can lead to significant water savings. Always use the eco setting unless dishes or clothes are heavily soiled.
  • Dripping taps can waste up to 4 litres of water a day - replace worn tap washers quickly.
  • Burst water pipes can cause serious damage as well as waste water. Make sure your water pipes and external pipes are properly lagged for the winter.
