A rubbish problem

We all throw rubbish out from our homes. This rubbish either ends up in landfill sites or incinerators. Both incinerators and landfill cause massive damage to our environment.

  • Landfill releases toxins, explosive gases and polluting liquids. Methane, a greenhouse gas, is released by landfill sites, contributing to climate change.
  • Landfill also creates problems for local communities, increasing traffic, noise, smells, smoke, dust and pests.
  • Incinerators encourage more waste as local authorities abandon recycling and waste reduction plans to meet the minimum rubbish requirements to operate the incinerators.
  • Incinerators cause pollution - smoke, gases and ash can contain harmful dioxins which can cause cancer.

What can we do about this?

Much of what we throw away could be either reused or recycled.

  • At present the UK only recycles 17% of our refuse.
  • The Environment Agency has found that 9 out of 10 people in England and Wales would recycle more if it was made easier

GreenSteps supports businesses which manufacture products made from waste or recycled products. GreenSteps also supports manufacturers with the very best reputations for reliability and the longevity of products. When you purchase goods through GreenSteps, you can be sure that you are supporting businesses with the best available waste policies in their fields.

GreenSteps has gathered together some top-tips for how we can change our behaviour and reduce the impact of our waste on the environment.

  • Only buy things you really need. GreenSteps does not sell any products which are frivolous or wasteful.
  • Think twice before you put something in the bin. Many containers could be used again.
  • If you have a garden, dispose of food waste in a composter or a wormery to create your own compost.
  • Buy only food and drinks which have returnable or recyclable containers and avoid foods with excessive packaging.
  • Give away or sell items which you no longer need. Charity shops or ebay are excellent ways of ensuring that your items are reused.
  • Recycle as much of your household waste as possible. Participate in all the local recycling schemes that you can. Get in touch with your local authority and ask them to improve their recycling services.

GreenSteps products are made by manufacturers which use recycled materials wherever possible, for example:
