Being green is healthy

  • The health and wellbeing of our families and loved ones is precious to everyone. The link between our homes and our health and wellbeing is one of the less widely understood aspects of living an eco-friendly life. The benefits many eco-friendly products bring include numerous positive impacts on a family's health.

What can you do?

GreenSteps has gathered together some of the ways that eco-friendly practices and products can positively impact your family's health:

  • Excess humidity and condensation in a home allows dust mites, mould and fungi to thrive. Dust mites and fungi in particular exacerbate allergies and respiratory conditions such as asthma.
  • Using moisture regulating materials such as natural insulationbreathable paints and green building systems in a properly ventilated house can greatly reduce humidity levels, thereby reducing allergies and asthma.
  • Extremes of temperature can also create an unhealthy home environment. Below 16 degrees C, resistance to respiratory illness can be diminished. A well insulated home with energy efficient heating and heating controls will maintain a more consistent temperature, staying cooler on a hot day and warmer on a cold night.
  • Many chemicals found in everyday household products are harmful to our health. Fibres from man-made insulation materials can become airborne and be inhaled. Gases from paints, finishes and other man-made products in the home can also harm our health. Using eco friendly paints and finishes and natural insulation materials can help to avoid these problems.
  • By following some of the recommendations on the Transport page, we can improve our health and wellbeing. Walking and cycling are very effective forms of exercise, saving transport costs and energy at the same time.
